MAPUCHE POLITICAL PRISONERS IN TEMUCO START HUNGER STRIKE

PUBLIC STATEMENT FROM TEMUKO JAIL - OCTOBER 1st, 2012

To the national and international public opinion, we the Mapuche Political Prisoners, held in jail in Temuco, Leonardo Quijón Pereira, Luís Marileo Cariqueo, Fernando Millacheo Marin, Guido Bahamondes and Cristian Levinao Melinao want to make known the following:

Kiñe(1): We announce that today Monday, October 1st, 2012, we initiated a hunger strike for an indefinite period as a reaction to the lack of response of Gendarmerie of Chile to the demands for our rights.

Epu(2): This drastic decision we made as Mapuche Political Prisoners, is due to the incompetent decisions  that Chilean Gendarmerie has made in obedience to the Chilean government and the businessmen and landowners who manage the laws against us to keep us away from our families and loved ones.

Therefore we demand:

- THE IMMEDIATE TRANSFER OF US, THE 5 MAPUCHE POLITICAL PRISONERS, TO THE CCP IN THE CITY OF ANGOL, AS THE PLACE OF IMPRISONMENT NEAREST TO OUR FAMILIES.

- AN END TO THE HUMILIATING AND DEGRADING SEARCHES CONDUCTED BY THE GENDARMERIE OF CHILE ON OUR FAMILY AND FRIENDS WHO VISIT US.

Küla(3): We demand an answer to these requests, because as prisoners we have the right to be serving as dictated, in the prison closest to our homes in order to receive in the best way our visitors. Considering that we recognize that these are strategies used by the Powers to silence our struggle and resistance.

As for the humiliating searches carried out by the Chilean Gendarmerie on our family and friends, we demand a differential and dignified treatment, considering that our imprisonment is due to causes of a political nature and not a for a crime like the rest of the interns of these facilities for serving prison.

Meli(4): We remind the national and international public opinion that we demand the fulfillment of these rights, as we are held in this prison as a result of the fight that we carry together with our Mapuche communities, for the recovery of our territory, which has been seized and exploited by of the wealthiest businessmen in this country. This confinement reflects political ends that the state imposes on us as subordinates of businessmen and landowners. But we make it clear that our fight continues for the recovery of our territory, for the right to our waters, and a life of dignity and freedom.

Kechu(5): We deliver from Temuko jail our maximum support to our peñi(brothers) on hunger strike since now 36 days, as the only action the state and businessmen are leaving us to enforce our rights, we demand immediate answers for those who risk their lives as a result of arbitrary and opaque trials.

Lastly: We call for solidarity and awareness among the peoples to openly take part in any activity to support our peñi and wenüy(frends) who are on hunger strike, wherein we, like them, have put our lives at stake to the cause of the Mapuche people and against any social injustice being committed today in this country of invaders and racism.
