This Wednesday february 27, the Lonko of the Community Newen Mapu of Chequenco was released, after the Court of Collipulli accepted the half prescription of punishment.
The Lonko Juan Ciriaco Millacheo Licán was sentenced in 2004 to 10 years in prison on charges of arson under the Anti-Terrorism Act for the case of the Poluco Pidenco estate. However, the Lonko resisted the persecution, evading imprisonment for nearly a decade.
The Mapuche authority was arrested on Friday February 8 in Neuquén, Puelmapu (Argentina), being taken to the Chilean justice by PDI personnel and entered into Angol prison, where he began a hunger strike.
After almost three weeks, today the Court of Collipulli decided to accept the request of the defense of ordering the half prescription of the penalty, for the time elapsed since the events of which he was accused. Thus, the sentence was reduced from 10 years in prison to 818 days of house arrest, which he must meet with a monthly signature in the Gendarmerie.
